Clearing Catch Benches

Short: Clearing Catch Benches

The first attempts to control avalanches on Kootenay Pass consisted of building level benches above the highway, so that the avalanches would accumulate there instead of spilling onto the highway. The benches had to be cleared after each slide, though, otherwise the next one would just keep on going to the highway, often taking the accumulated snow of the previous one with it. In this photo, Lorne Reine is pushing the snow off the edge of the avalanche bench. This was a very time-consuming process, and the highway would have to be closed while the benches were cleared and then the snow removed from the highway below.
